Antra Jurka is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Medicine, Riga Stradiņš University, and a Leading Researcher at the Research Institute of Cardiology and Regenerative Medicine, University of Latvia. Her academic and research journey spans over three decades.
Education:
- Doctor’s Degree in Biology (1999), Institute of Experimental and Clinical Medicine, University of Latvia

Research Interests: Jurka focuses on metabolic syndrome, prediabetes, type-2 diabetes, and cardiovascular risk factors. Her work also explores arterial hypertension and inflammatory markers in maternal and pediatric contexts.
Publications: Jurka’s recent research trends center on inflammatory biomarkers (e.g., PAI-1, MPO, neopterin), their role in gestational diabetes, obesity-related complications, and pediatric critical care. She has contributed to studies linking cytokines to acute appendicitis and developed diagnostic tests for cardiometabolic risks.
Projects: Jurka was a main executor for grants from the Latvian Council of Science (07-VP-8), European Economic Area (EEZ08AP-5/2), and Latvian National Programs (10-4/VPP-2.4, 10-4/VPP-5/1). These projects aimed to improve early diagnostics for obesity-related diseases, study pharmacogenetics of diabetes, and develop cardiovascular risk panels.
Students: She has supervised one doctoral thesis and reviewed one master’s thesis.
Labs and Teams: Jurka works with the Latvian Society of Laboratory Specialists and collaborates with institutions like the Pauls Stradiņš Clinical University Hospital and European Federation for Colposcopy.
