Antony Upward is a Visiting Professor at Halmstad University's School of Business, Engineering and Science, Department of Innovation Management. He is also an Adjunct Professor at OCAD University, Toronto, and a member of the Business Model Innovation research group at Halmstad's Center for Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Learning (CIEL). His primary affiliation is with Halmstad University, where he contributes to research on sustainable business models and flourishing enterprises.
Upward holds a Master’s in Environmental Studies (Business Model Design and Sustainability) and a Graduate Diploma in Business and the Environment from York University. His career spans over 30 years in technology and management consulting, with roles at Apple, Bell Canada, and others, focusing on enterprise applications like ERP and CRM systems.
His research interests center on designing business models that align with ecological, social, and financial sustainability. He co-founded the Strongly Sustainable Business Model Group (SSBMG) and the Flourishing Enterprise Institute (FEI), aiming to shift global business practices toward sustainability-as-flourishing by 2030. Key tools include the Flourishing Business Canvas and the Lean for Flourishing Startup Method.
Upward’s work emphasizes systemic design and collaborative frameworks to enable resilient, regenerative enterprises. His projects, such as the Flourishing Enterprise Strategy Design Method, integrate science-based principles with strategic planning. He collaborates internationally with institutions like EIT-Climate-KIC and the Viessmann Centre for Sustainability at Wilfrid Laurier University.
Upward is also a consultant through Edward James Consulting Ltd., a Certified B Corporation, and actively promotes initiatives like the Flourishing Fiction Co-laboratory to enhance imaginative capacities for sustainable futures.
