Dr. Antonis Kirmizis is a Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Cyprus, leading the Epigenetics and Gene Regulation Laboratory. His research focuses on understanding how epigenetic mechanisms, particularly histone modifications, regulate gene transcription and contribute to diseases like cancer and aging. He holds a PhD in Cellular and Molecular Biology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA), a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Cambridge (UK), and a Bachelor's degree from Lawrence University (USA).
His laboratory employs interdisciplinary approaches, including molecular biology, biochemistry, genetics, and omics techniques, using mammalian and yeast models. Key research areas include the role of histone N-alpha-terminal acetylation in cancer (via enzymes like NAA40) and aging (linked to calorie restriction and metabolic pathways). Recent work highlights how histone modifications influence oncogene activation, stress responses, and longevity-related genes.
Publications from 2020-2004 reflect his expertise in histone acetylation/methylation crosstalk, epigenetic drivers of cancer metastasis, and mechanisms underlying cellular lifespan extension. The lab also investigates metabolic interactions with histone modifiers, such as acetyl-CoA consumption and its impact on cellular metabolism.
