Antonio Helio Castro Neto is a Distinguished Professor and Director of the Centre for Advanced 2D Materials at the National University of Singapore. He received his PhD from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1994 and has established himself as a leading authority in graphene and two-dimensional materials research.
His research program spans multiple frontiers of condensed matter physics:
- Comprehensive studies of graphene physics in all its manifestations
- Investigations of strongly correlated electron systems
- Research on spin and charge density waves
- Exploration of quantum magnetism phenomena
- Analysis of superconductivity in novel materials
- Studies of disordered magnetic systems
Castro Neto's publication record demonstrates significant contributions to the field of 2D materials, with work spanning fundamental properties to potential applications. His research on pseudo-magnetic fields in strained graphene structures and quantum phenomena in bilayer systems represents cutting-edge advances in the field. His highly cited review articles have helped define the rapidly evolving field of two-dimensional crystals.
As Director of the Centre for Advanced 2D Materials, he leads a major research initiative focused on exploring the properties and applications of atomically thin materials beyond graphene, including transition metal dichalcogenides and other van der Waals materials. This position reflects his leadership in what has become one of the most dynamic areas of modern physics research.
