Dr. Antonio D. Tillis serves as the M. D. Anderson Professor in Hispanic Studies and Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences at the University of Houston, where he leads one of the institution's largest academic units while maintaining an active scholarly profile. His dual role combines high-level administrative leadership with significant contributions to Afro-Latin American studies.
His research focuses on the intersections of race, culture, and literature within Afro-Hispanic contexts, particularly examining cultural identity formation and literary traditions of African-descendant communities across Latin America and the Caribbean. Through rigorous analysis of historical narratives and contemporary cultural production, his work illuminates marginalized voices and challenges Eurocentric perspectives in Hispanic studies.
Dr. Tillis's publications, including seven books and dozens of articles, consistently explore Afro-Hispanic cultural production with particular emphasis on literary anthologies and critical frameworks. His recent work The Afro-Hispanic Reader and Anthology (2019) demonstrates his methodological approach of combining archival research with cultural theory to document understudied traditions, revealing patterns of diaspora identity and resistance across Hispanic America.
