Antonietta S. Quigg is a Regents Professor of Marine Biology at Texas A&M University at Galveston, specializing in phytoplankton ecophysiology, environmental stress responses, and marine ecosystem dynamics. She holds a Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from Monash University (2000) and B.S. degrees in Biochemistry from La Trobe University (Australia).
Her research focuses on phytoplankton’s physiological adaptations to environmental stressors such as oil spills, nanomaterials, and climate-driven disturbances. Key interests include marine oil snow sedimentation (MOSSFA), microbial exopolymeric substances (EPS), and the impacts of pollutants like PFAS and microplastics on marine communities. She leads the Phytoplankton Dynamics Lab, emphasizing interdisciplinary approaches to study plankton dynamics, food web interactions, and coastal ecosystem resilience.
Recent work addresses hurricane impacts on carbon cycling, hydrological changes in estuaries, and the ecological consequences of extreme weather events. Quigg collaborates extensively on oil spill research, including studies post-Deepwater Horizon, and integrates molecular, biochemical, and field-based methodologies.
Education:
- Ph.D. Biological Sciences, Monash University, Australia (2000)
- B.S. Biochemistry (Honors), La Trobe University, Australia (1990)
Grants and Projects include NOAA funding for estuarine fish community assessments and NSF support for microplastic pollution studies. Her lab actively engages graduate students in fieldwork and laboratory-based research, emphasizing hands-on training in marine science.
