Antong Liu is an Assistant Professor of Political Science and Lee Kong Chian Fellow at the School of Social Sciences, Singapore Management University. His research focuses on normative political theory, particularly modern Western political thought (focusing on early modern Europe) and East Asian political thought (especially China). He teaches Political Theory at the undergraduate level and has held visiting positions at the University of Hong Kong and Humboldt University Berlin.
Dr. Liu earned his Ph.D. in Political Science from Duke University (2019), an M.A. from Duke (2014), and a B.A. in International Politics and Sociology from Peking University (2012). Before joining SMU, he was a Postdoctoral Research Associate at Brown University’s Political Theory Project (2019–2021) and a Lecturer of Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at the University of Maryland, College Park (2021–2024).
His work examines ethical implications of political motivations, engaging thinkers like Machiavelli, Hobbes, Mandeville, Montesquieu, Rousseau, Adam Smith, Kant, and Han Feizi. Recent scholarship explores themes such as honor in early modern political thought, reputation-driven disobedience in Chinese legalist tradition, and Rousseau’s views on political pluralism.
His publications appear in top journals like the American Political Science Review and Political Research Quarterly. Research interests also include moral psychology, democratic citizenship, and comparative political philosophy.
