Antonella Maria Maggio is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological, Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences and Technologies at the University of Palermo. Her academic work spans research, teaching, and thesis supervision in chemistry and environmental sciences.
Her research focuses on natural products, particularly secondary metabolites from Mediterranean and endemic Sicilian plants such as Ferula communis, Abies nebrodensis, and Tanacetum vulgare. She investigates chemical variability, catalytic activity of citrus species, polyphenols in olive oil, and applications in food safety and smart packaging. Her work integrates analytical techniques like HPLC and explores biocatalyzed processes.
While no individual publications are listed, her supervised theses indicate a consistent research trajectory in phytochemistry, biodiversity, and sustainable materials over more than a decade. She has also contributed to science education through authoring high school textbooks such as Chemistry from H to Z and Reactions, Metabolism and Genes.
She supervises master’s students in Chemistry and Environmental Sciences, with recent thesis topics including the aromatic profile of Nero d'Avola wine, characterization of grape seed metabolites, and development of biodegradable packaging systems. She has participated in national educational conferences, highlighting her commitment to pedagogical innovation, especially in distance learning contexts.
Dr. Maggio is actively involved in academic service, offering regular office hours and contributing to curriculum development and educational outreach.
