Antoine Payot

Dr. Antoine Payot is a Full Professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the Université de Montréal and a neonatologist at the CHU Sainte-Justine Hospital. He leads the Bureau de l'Ethique Clinique at the Faculty of Medicine and directs the Unité d’éthique clinique mère-enfant at CHU Sainte-Justine. His academic roles include overseeing innovative training programs in clinical ethics at the master’s and doctoral levels, the first of its kind in Canada and the French-speaking world. His research focuses on clinical ethics communication, parental involvement in medical decisions, narrative ethics, prenatal diagnosis ethics, and perinatal palliative care.

• PhD in Biomedical Sciences (Bioethics) from Université de Montréal (2008)

Research Interests: His work bridges theoretical bioethics with clinical practice, emphasizing personalized communication and ethical decision-making in neonatal and perinatal settings. He has pioneered frameworks for antenatal consultations and palliative care protocols that prioritize parental perspectives.

• Recipient of major awards including the Ordre de l'Excellence en Éducation (2022) and the Pediatric Chairs of Canada Educator Leadership Award (2023).
• Lead researcher on projects funded by the Fonds de recherche du Québec, CIHR, and the Fondation Ste-Justine, focusing on ethics in healthcare resource allocation and pediatric palliative care.

Labs/Teams: Directs the Clinical Ethics Unit at CHU Sainte-Justine, a hub for research, education, and decision support in complex ethical cases. Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams across neonatology, bioethics, and public health.
