Anthony Teate is a tenured Full Professor in the Department of Integrated Science and Technology at James Madison University (JMU), part of the College of Integrated Science & Engineering. He serves as Director of the Data Science and Applied Machine Learning Laboratory. His academic journey includes a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Theoretical Physics from the University of South Florida, an M.S. in Physics from the University of Michigan, and a B.S. in Physics from Morehouse College.
Professor Teate’s research focuses on machine learning applications in nano-scale materials design (e.g., optical/electrical properties of graphene and quantum dot lasers), IoT/embedded systems, and photovoltaic technologies. He also develops Python-based frameworks (Anaconda, TensorFlow) for machine learning and cloud computing (AWS/Google). His theoretical work includes computational modeling of nano-systems using Hartree-Fock methods and tight-binding models.
Teaching spans calculus-based physics, machine learning, programming (Python/C++), and database systems. He founded Neosentials, Inc., a software company, and advises the IEEE Computer Society. His community engagement includes technology-driven business initiatives in Harrisonburg, VA.
Professional affiliations include the IEEE, American Association of Physics Teachers, and Charlottesville Data Science Meetup Group. His work bridges academia and industry through applied machine learning, materials science, and technology entrepreneurship.
