Anthony Schwacha is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh. His research focuses on DNA replication mechanisms, particularly the regulatory functions of the Mcm2-7 replicative helicase in cancer development. He joined the Department in 2003 after completing postdoctoral studies at MIT and a PhD at Harvard University. His lab employs biochemical, genetic, and structural approaches using the budding yeast S. cerevisiae as a model system.

Research interests center on the Mcm2-7 helicase's role in genome stability, including its regulatory discontinuity mechanism and its potential as a chemotherapeutic target. Current projects include identifying small molecule inhibitors of Mcm2-7 activity and elucidating how the helicase's structural changes influence DNA replication fidelity. Collaborations with structural biologists have provided critical insights into the Mcm2-7 gate hypothesis.
Lab members include past graduate student Jordan Sanders, visiting instructor Nick Wechter, and research assistant Sriram Vijayraghavan. The lab’s work has been featured in PLoS Genetics, Nature, and Molecular Cell Biology.
Advising includes mentoring graduate students like Jordan Sanders, and grants support studies on replication stress and checkpoint signaling. Ongoing projects aim to bridge in vitro mechanistic studies with in vivo cellular outcomes, emphasizing translational applications in cancer therapy.
