Anthony Petro is an Associate Professor in the Department of American Studies at the University of Notre Dame. His research and teaching focus on gender and sexuality studies, U.S. religious history, visual culture, and the cultural dynamics of the 1980s.

His scholarly work examines intersections of religion, sexuality, and public health, particularly through publications like Provoking Religion: Sex, Art, and the Culture Wars (2025) and After the Wrath of God: AIDS, Sexuality, and American Religion (2015). Petro is also engaged in a biography of Catholic writer Kathryn Hulme.
