Anthony J. Bauer is an Associate Professor of Physiology in the College of Osteopathic Medicine. His research focuses on immunological regulation of gastrointestinal function in disease states such as sepsis, postoperative ileus, and inflammatory bowel disease. He has contributed to understanding mechanisms underlying gastrointestinal dysfunction through studies on cytokines, interstitial cells of Cajal networks, and surgical complications. Bauer has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and co-authored clinical guidelines for thyroid disorders in children.
Education:
- B.S. in Biology and Psychology, St. Norbert College (1978)
- Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences, Eastern Virginia Medical School (1985)
- National Institutes of Health Postdoctoral Fellowship at Mayo Graduate School
Research Interests:
Dr. Bauer’s lab investigates immune pathways affecting gastrointestinal motility, particularly in sepsis, trauma, and surgical interventions. Key areas include:
- Interleukin-10’s role in restoring gastric motility in diabetes
- Pathophysiology of postoperative ileus and sepsis-induced intestinal failure
- Translational research on intestinal transplantation and inflammatory bowel disease
His work bridges basic science and clinical applications, aiming to improve surgical outcomes and disease management.
Recent Article Themes:
Recent publications address immunological modulation of gut function, postoperative complications, and genetic factors in cancer predisposition. These studies often employ rodent models and clinical data from multinational databases.
Awards & Grants:
No specific awards listed, though his sustained research output suggests grant-funded work. Notable collaborations include studies on pediatric thyroidectomy outcomes and DICER1-related tumors.
Labs/Teams:
Active research projects include five ongoing studies in gastrointestinal immunology, conducted within the Center for Research at his institution.
