Anthony Graham is a Professor of Developmental Biology at King's College London, affiliated with the Centre for Developmental Neurobiology and the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience. He holds a PhD from University College London (1990) and a BSc from the University of Glasgow (1986). His research focuses on the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying vertebrate head development, particularly the interactions between neural crest cells, pharyngeal arches, and sensory placodes. He is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Anatomy and has edited multiple special issues on evolutionary developmental biology.
Key research themes include the evolutionary origins of pharyngeal segmentation, roles of endodermal-ectodermal interactions, and the developmental basis of congenital head malformations. Notable collaborations include work with Dr. Clemens Kiecker (King's College London) and Dr. Gareth Fraser (University of Florida). Recent publications emphasize redefining pharyngeal arch terminology and linking developmental processes to cardiovascular malformations.
He has secured grants for projects like 'Investigating the developmental basis for anatomical variations in wound repair and disease susceptibility' (2021–2025) and previously led studies on pharyngeal pouch development and GnRH neuron migration. His work bridges evolutionary biology with clinical implications, contributing to UN Sustainable Development Goals in health and education.
