University of Floridaمعرفی
Gareth Fraser is an Associate Professor in the Department of Zoology at the University of Florida, within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. His research focuses on evolutionary developmental biology (EvoDevo), examining how vertebrates generate and regenerate complex structures like teeth, skin appendages, and sensory organs. Using fish models such as pufferfish, cichlids, and sharks, his lab investigates stem cell niches in tooth regeneration and developmental transitions, such as the tooth-to-beak evolution in pufferfish. Notably, they discovered a Turing-like patterning mechanism in shark skin denticle formation, linking it to feather and hair development in other vertebrates.
Fraser holds a Ph.D. from King’s College, London. His teaching includes courses like ZOO6927 Neuro-Evo-Devo and ZOO3713C Functional Vertebrate Anatomy. His lab’s work bridges basic science with ecological and evolutionary perspectives, exploring how developmental processes shape morphological diversity. Recent projects emphasize regeneration dynamics, stem cell biology, and the interplay between form and function across vertebrate lineages.
His publications span over two decades, with recent contributions focusing on shark denticle diversity, tooth regeneration mechanisms, and evolutionary transitions in amphibians and cartilaginous fish. Fraser’s research underscores the importance of EvoDevo in understanding both conserved developmental pathways and novel adaptations across vertebrate species.
