Anthony Gill is a Professor of Political Science at the University of Washington and an Adjunct Professor of Sociology there. He holds affiliations as Distinguished Senior Fellow at Baylor University’s Institute for Studies of Religion and Senior Fellow at the American Institute for Economic Research. His research focuses on political economy, religion & politics, church-state relations, and religious liberty, with notable works including Rendering unto Caesar: The Catholic Church and the State in Latin America (1998) and The Political Origins of Religious Liberty (2007). Gill is internationally recognized for his defense of tipping (gratuities) and his analysis of religious economies.
He earned his Ph.D. from UCLA and has received the University of Washington’s Distinguished Teaching Award (1999). His current research explores how norms coordinate societal behavior without government intervention, including studies on religious institutional endurance, socio-economic benefits of gift-giving, and clashing norms’ impact on liberty. Gill hosts the Research on Religion podcast and has appeared on EconTalk.
His teaching includes courses on political economy, public choice, and religion & politics. Personal interests include camping, martial arts (black belt in Tae Kwon Do), scuba diving, and property rights advocacy.
