Anthony Gardner is Professor of Contemporary Art History and Fellow of The Queen’s College at the University of Oxford, where he also serves as Director of Graduate Studies. Previously Head of the Ruskin School of Art (2017-2020), his scholarship bridges political theory with global art and exhibition histories since the 1950s.

- Editorial Roles: Co-editor of MIT Press' ARTMargins, editorial board member of multiple journals
His research interrogates anti-imperial and post-socialist art through translocal curatorial practices, particularly biennials and documenta in geopolitical contexts. Recent work examines exhibition strategies in crisis zones and contiguous art histories that challenge Western hegemony.
Scientific Contributions include:
- Co-authored Biennials, Triennials and documenta (2016)
- Politically Unbecoming (MIT Press 2015) analyzing art's rejection of democratic frameworks
- Key essays on Johannesburg Biennale, documenta 14, and Southern Hemisphere art
As a dedicated doctoral supervisor, he mentors students including Adjoa Armah and Valerie Asiimwe Amani. His work has received 2017 Alfred H Barr Award finalist recognition for collaborative curatorial scholarship.
