Anthony F Lang Jr. is a Professor of International Political Theory at the University of St Andrews, School of International Relations. He holds editorial roles for journals including Global Constitutionalism and Journal of International Political Theory. His research focuses on global constitutionalism, ethics, and international law, with influences from figures like Hannah Arendt and Hugo Grotius. Lang has served in leadership roles within the International Studies Association (ISA), including President of the International Ethics Section and Academic Freedom Committee Chair. He has advised the UNODC and UK Ministry of Defense on ethical issues and examined PhD candidates globally.
Education: BA in Philosophy from University of Notre Dame (1990), MA and PhD from Johns Hopkins University (1996). Prior roles include Assistant Professor at American University in Cairo (1996–2000) and Programme Officer at Carnegie Council (2000–2003).
Research interests explore the intersection of politics, law, and ethics, particularly global constituent power, international organizations, and military intervention. Recent work addresses universality in global narratives and speculative fiction in international relations. He founded the Centre for Global Constitutionalism (2007–2016) and served as Head of School (2016–2019).
Teaching modules include international political theory, ethics of force, and global constitutionalism. His publications span peer-reviewed articles and edited volumes on just war theory, human rights, and global governance.
