Anthony Chaney is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of History & Political Science at the University of North Texas at Dallas, specializing in US intellectual, social, and cultural history. He holds a PhD in the History of Ideas from the University of Texas-Dallas and a Masters in the Arts of Teaching from The School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont.
His research interests focus on the intersections of intellectual history, cultural studies, and environmental humanities. Chaney's work frequently examines how historical ideas shape contemporary cultural and political landscapes, with particular attention to ecological consciousness and American cultural identity.
His 2017 book, Runaway: Gregory Bateson, the Double Bind, and the Rise of Ecological Consciousness (University of North Carolina Press), represents a significant interdisciplinary contribution drawing on natural philosophy, hard sciences, social sciences, and American cultural history. His scholarship demonstrates a consistent pattern of bridging historical analysis with contemporary concerns, particularly regarding environmental issues and social justice.
Chaney is an active contributor to the Society for US Intellectual History Blog, where he publishes essays connecting historical scholarship to current events, literature, music, and cultural phenomena. His recent writings have engaged with works by Amitav Ghosh, Matthew Desmond, and Jonathan Eig, demonstrating his commitment to making historical perspectives relevant to contemporary debates.
