Anthony Bateza is an Associate Professor of Religion and Chair of the Department of Race, Ethnic, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (REGSS) at St. Olaf College. He holds a B.S. from Iowa State University (2002), M.Div. from the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago (2006), and Ph.D. from Princeton Theological Seminary (2017). His research focuses on Martin Luther's political theology, human agency, Augustinian thought, and intersections of race, identity, and social justice in theology. He actively engages with Black liberation theology and Lutheran responses to systemic racism. Dr. Bateza teaches in the Religion department and directs the Race and Ethnic Studies (RACE) program. He is an ordained ELCA Lutheran pastor, frequently contributing to congregational and church events. Beyond academia, he enjoys cycling, board games, comic books, and cooking with his family.
