Anssi Karvonen is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Biological and Environmental Science, University of Jyväskylä. His research focuses on understanding how interactions among parasites and their genotypes influence host health, with applications to aquaculture disease prevention and conservation biology. He leads projects on parasite co-infections, environmental effects on disease epidemiology, and the survival of stocked fish in wild environments.
Key research interests include: parasite community dynamics, host resistance/tolerance mechanisms, ecological differentiation in fish populations, and the impacts of environmental factors (e.g., temperature, enrichment) on disease outcomes. His work bridges ecology, evolutionary biology, and applied aquaculture practices.
Recent projects include:
- "Environmental effects on complex parasite interactions" (2017–2021)
- "Survival of stocked fish in the wild" (2017–2022)
- "Kymppi - Kalatalouden ympäristöohjelma" (2024–2026)
Notable findings include how environmental enrichment can enhance microbial diversity and reduce disease outbreaks in aquaculture, and the role of hybridization in conservation efforts for endangered salmonids. His research also highlights the importance of parasite community composition in revealing ecological differentiation among fish morphs.
Labs/Teams: Member of the Aquatic Sciences group (BIOENV) and the School of Resource Wisdom (JYU.Wisdom). Collaborations include co-authorship with researchers such as Ines Klemme, Timo Marjomäki, and Pekka Hyvärinen.
