Jouni Salonen is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Department of Biological and Environmental Science, University of Jyväskylä, within the Faculty of Mathematics and Science. He has held previous roles as a Visiting Researcher and Grant Researcher at the same department. His research focuses on freshwater mussel conservation, host-parasite dynamics, and the ecological interactions between aquatic organisms. Key interests include the endangered freshwater pearl mussel Margaritifera margaritifera, its host fish species, and innovative methods for population surveys and habitat restoration.
Salonen’s work emphasizes the role of salmonid fish as hosts for mussel survival, the impact of invasive species on native populations, and the application of electrofishing for population monitoring. His research contributes to understanding how environmental factors like manganese exposure and life-history traits influence fish-mussel symbiosis. Collaborations with colleagues like Jouni Taskinen have explored geographic distribution patterns and conservation strategies for freshwater biodiversity.
He has presented findings at conferences such as the 2014 International meeting RAAKKU! in Rovaniemi, Finland, and published extensively in peer-reviewed journals on topics including mussel lifecycle, host specificity, and conservation methodologies. His contributions aim to bridge ecological theory with practical conservation practices to protect vulnerable freshwater ecosystems.
