Anselme Cormier is a Senior Lecturer in Ancient History and Archaeology at the Université catholique de l’Ouest (UCO) in Nantes, where he also serves as Head of History. His research focuses on Roman material culture, particularly ivory and bone artifacts in Pompeii, exploring their social, economic, and symbolic roles. He holds a Doctorate in History and Archaeology of the Ancient Worlds from Paris Nanterre University (2015).
Key research themes include the contextual analysis of ivory and bone objects in domestic and funerary settings, excavations at Pompeii’s Porta Nocera necropolis, and digital preservation of archaeological artifacts. He leads major projects like IVORies (Investigation and Valorization of Roman Ivories) and collaborates with institutions such as the Centre Jean Bérard (Naples) and the University of Oklahoma on ancient DNA studies of ivory.
Recent work includes studies on ivory trade routes, funerary beds in Roman burials, and 3D modeling of Pompeii’s Casa Bacco. He has organized conferences on topics like Roman Middle East policy and funerary rituals, and authored books such as *LECTVS EBVRNEVS* on ivory funerary beds. His research integrates archaeology, social history, and digital methods to illuminate ancient material networks and cultural practices.
