Dr. Anouk Beniest is an Assistant Professor in Geology and Geochemistry at the Faculty of Science, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Her research focuses on tectonic processes, including continental rifting, subduction zones, and the geodynamic evolution of regions like the Scotia Sea and North Anatolian Fault. She holds a PhD from Sorbonne University (formerly Université Pierre et Marie Curie) and has conducted extensive fieldwork and numerical modeling studies.
Education:
- PhD in Earth Sciences (2015–2018), Sorbonne University
- Master's in Structural and Seismic Interpretation (2013–2014), Sorbonne University
- Master's in Adria-Europe Collisional Zone Studies (2011–2013), Utrecht University
- Bachelor's in Earth Sciences (2007–2010), Utrecht University
Research Interests: Her work integrates plate tectonics, geodynamics, and numerical modeling to understand continental rifting, conjugate margins, and the evolution of transform faults. Key areas include the Scotia Sea's crustal structure, North Anatolian Fault dynamics, and the role of mantle plumes in subduction initiation.
Recent Publications: Her recent work explores tectonic quiescence in back-arc regions, neo-colonialism in geoscience communication, and the Scotia Sea's geological puzzle. She advocates for decolonizing scientific language and promoting equity in the geosciences.
Courses Taught:
- Basin Tectonics and Subsurface Resources
- Case Studies in Tectonics
- Applied Stratigraphy
Labs/Teams: She collaborates on projects involving seismic tomography, numerical modeling, and field expeditions in regions like the Lau Basin and North Aegean Sea.
