Dr. Anniina Suominen serves as Professor of Art Pedagogy at Aalto University's School of Art, Design and Architecture (ARTS) within the Department of Art and Media. She concurrently holds leadership positions as Head of Education and Vice-Head of the Department. Her academic journey spans both Finnish and American institutions, reflecting a transnational perspective on art education.
Her educational background includes a BA/MA from the University of Arts and Design Helsinki (1999) and a Ph.D. in Art Education from The Ohio State University (2003). These formative experiences in two distinct educational contexts have significantly shaped her interdisciplinary approach to art pedagogy.
Professor Suominen's research explores artistic epistemologies through multiple lenses: equity and social justice in education, sensuous ways of knowing, and the relationship between art education and broader societal structures. Her work particularly emphasizes how artistic practices can advance democratic values and address critical issues including gender diversity, immigrant rights, and human rights. A distinctive aspect of her scholarship involves examining knowing and learning in relation to place, others (including diverse environments and animals), creating what she terms 'sensuous epistemologies' that challenge conventional educational frameworks.
Analysis of Professor Suominen's recent publications (2022-2025) reveals three prominent research trajectories: arts-based research methodologies with European comparative perspectives, artpreneurship examining cross-sector collaborations in arts education, and ecological approaches to art that explore interspecies relations. Her work increasingly integrates ecological consciousness with social justice concerns, particularly evident in publications addressing animals, plants, and environmental systems within artistic practices. The evolution from traditional art education frameworks toward more expansive, interconnected approaches reflects contemporary challenges in arts education.

Professor Suominen leads the artpreneurship research team (Luova Lämpiö, 2024-2025) funded by Business Finland/Next Generation EU, and has directed significant interdisciplinary projects including Future Artpreneurship (2021-2022) and National Visions for Arts Education 2030. Her grant portfolio demonstrates strategic alignment with national and European funding priorities in arts education innovation. She actively collaborates with international scholars across Europe, particularly in Spain, reflecting her commitment to transnational dialogue in art education.
The Artpreneurship Research Team (Luova Lämpiö) represents Professor Suominen's primary research collective, focusing on ethical dimensions of cross-sector partnerships in arts education. This team operates within the broader context of Aalto University's commitment to interdisciplinary research, connecting with initiatives across the university that bridge art, business, and social innovation. Her leadership extends to national coordination through the National Visions for Arts Education 2030 project, which brings together stakeholders across Finland's arts education ecosystem.
