Anniina Hyttinen is a Doctoral Researcher affiliated with the Helsinki Hub on Emotions, Populism and Polarisation at the University of Helsinki. Her work focuses on political humor, cultural populism, and democratic challenges in Central and Eastern Europe. She is part of the Doctoral Programme in Social Sciences and has contributed to interdisciplinary projects like POHU (Political Humor project funded by Kone Foundation) and NTUS (Now-Time, Us-Space: Hegemonic Mobilisations in Central and Eastern Europe).
- Education: Master of Social Sciences
Hyttinen’s research explores political humor as a tool for resistance and critique in hybrid regimes, particularly Hungary. She combines visual ethnography with cultural sociology to analyze how humor interacts with populist mobilization and polarization. Her work also examines symbolic changes in radical right parties (e.g., Jobbik’s deradicalization) and electoral dynamics under authoritarian-leaning governments (e.g., Fidesz’s electoral campaigns).
Her publications span journals like European Journal of Humour Research and Suomi-Unkari, reflecting trends in political satire, democratic backsliding, and visual political analysis. These works often intersect with themes of public sphere contestation and social movements in polarized contexts.
- Scientific Awards:
- Distinction for Excellent Thesis in Cultural Policy (2017)
Hyttinen has actively participated in academic events such as the Political Studies Association Annual International Conference (2022) and Sosiologipäivät (2021-2022). Her collaborative projects include interdisciplinary work on cultural populism and knowledge dynamics in polarized societies (WhiKnow), funded by the Kone Foundation and the Finnish Academy.
She is part of research teams analyzing hegemonic mobilizations in Central and Eastern Europe, emphasizing the role of temporal and spatial narratives in shaping political identities.
