Anniek van Doornik is a PhD Candidate and lecturer in speech and language development at Utrecht University's Humanities Institute for Language Sciences and HU University of Applied Sciences. Her research focuses on speech sound disorders in children, with particular emphasis on severity assessment, diagnostic frameworks, and therapeutic interventions aimed at optimizing children's participation in daily life. She works within the Language Acquisition, Processing and Disorders research group and collaborates extensively between academic and clinical settings.
Dr. van Doornik's research interests center on understanding and improving the diagnosis and treatment of speech sound disorders in children. Her work examines how speech-language pathologists assess severity, how children perceive their own speech abilities, and how communication partner familiarity affects intelligibility ratings. She investigates practical applications of the ICF model in clinical reasoning and develops assessment tools like KiddyCAT to improve practice-oriented research in speech therapy. Her research bridges theoretical understanding with clinical application to enhance therapeutic outcomes for children with speech disorders.
Analysis of Dr. van Doornik's publication record reveals a consistent focus on speech sound disorder severity assessment, with increasing emphasis on developing standardized constructs and clinical tools. Her work shows progression from foundational research on parent and therapist perceptions toward developing practical assessment frameworks. She has established strong collaborative networks with international researchers, particularly in Australia, and has contributed to both Dutch and international journals in speech-language pathology.
Dr. van Doornik actively participates in the academic community through conference presentations, workshops, and membership in professional networks. Her activities include presenting at the International Association for the Study of Child Language, participating in workshops on open access publishing, and contributing to the HU Promovendinetwerk (PhD candidate network). She has served as chair of the HU Promovendinetwerk and is a member of the Utrecht University organizational unit.
