Dr. Annie Sorbie is a Senior Lecturer in Health, Medical Law, and Ethics at the University of Edinburgh's School of Law. She holds dual roles as Director of Knowledge Exchange and Impact and Head of the Health, Medical Law and Ethics Subject Area. Her academic credentials include an LLB, Diploma in Law, and PhD.
Her research focuses on health research regulation, professional regulation of healthcare workers, and public interest ethics. Notable projects include the NIHR-funded study on Fitness to Practise hearings' witness experiences and an interdisciplinary project on Ukraine's healthcare reforms. She frequently advises governmental and third-sector bodies, including the Scottish Government and the Infected Blood Inquiry.
Dr. Sorbie leads the Mason Institute's policy portfolio and chairs major regulatory events like the 2024 Professional Health and Social Care Regulatory Event. Her work emphasizes improving regulatory frameworks through co-production and addressing challenges in data governance and professional accountability.
Recent outputs include studies on witness vulnerability in social work regulation, data ownership in biobanks, and ethical aspects of posthumous medical data use. She actively participates in international collaborations, such as the Edinburgh Global-funded Ukrainian healthcare governance project.
