Annie Pullen Sansfaçon is a full Professor at the École de travail social (School of Social Work) within the Faculté des arts et des sciences at Université de Montréal. She holds a Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Participatory Research and Empowerment of Vulnerable Youth and is affiliated with the Stellenbosch University School of Social Work in South Africa. Her work focuses on transgender youth, family dynamics, anti-oppressive practices, and ethical social work. She has been recognized with prestigious awards, including membership in the Royal Society of Canada (2023) and the YWCA Women of Excellence Award (2017).
Education: Ph.D. in Ethics and Social Work (De Montfort University, UK, 2007), M.Phil. (Social Work, De Montfort University), and Baccalauréat in Social Work (Université Laval).
Research interests include transgender youth well-being, family support systems, and ethical interventions. Notable projects include international studies on gender-affirming care and detransition, as well as community-based participatory research with Indigenous and racialized LGBTQ+ youth. She has supervised over 20 master’s and doctoral students, focusing on topics like moral distress in social work, racialized youth experiences, and family resilience.
Awards and recognition highlight her contributions to transgender advocacy and social work ethics. Key grants include funding from Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), and provincial agencies. She leads the 'Mamu' project, empowering Indigenous Two-Spirit youth, and co-leads the 'Clinic Mauve' initiative addressing LGBTQIA+ healthcare disparities.
Labs/Teams: Core member of the Trans Youth CAN! research network, director of the CRC ReParE (Research and Empowerment Chair), and collaborator in interdisciplinary teams focusing on racial and gender equity in healthcare and social services.
