Dr. Annie Mercier is a Professor at the Ocean Sciences Centre, Memorial University of Newfoundland, within the Faculty of Science. Her research focuses on marine biology, particularly benthic ecology, echinoderms (sea cucumbers, sea stars), and cnidarians (corals, sea anemones). She investigates species interactions, climate change impacts, and conservation strategies in cold-temperate, Arctic, and deep-sea environments. Dr. Mercier leads the Mercier Lab, which emphasizes hands-on training, photography, and public engagement through media and documentaries.
Education: B.Sc. from Université de Sherbrooke, M.Sc. and Ph.D. from Université du Québec à Rimouski. She teaches courses like OCSC 1000 (Introduction to Ocean Sciences) and Biology 4122 (Advanced Marine Animal Diversity).
Her research spans reproductive strategies, larval ecology, and stress responses in marine organisms. Recent work includes lunar rhythms in deep-sea reproduction, allogeneic fusion in cnidarians, and the ecological role of deep-sea corals. Publications highlight sea cucumber conservation, aquaculture, and biodiversity.
Lab activities involve collaborations with international scientists and focus on Arctic and boreal marine systems. The lab website (www.mercier-lab.ca) provides further details on research, facilities, and opportunities.
