Dr. Annie Lau is an Associate Professor (Research focused) at the Centre for Health Informatics, Australian Institute of Health Innovation at Macquarie University. She leads the Consumer Informatics stream, the most active consumer health informatics program in Australia. Her research focuses on digital health technologies to improve patient engagement, including analyzing patient work, designing digital interventions, and leveraging informatics for health behavior understanding. She holds a BE PhD from UNSW and is a Visiting Fellow at University College London and the University of Oxford.
Key achievements include a start-up venture from her consumer eHealth research, launched in Silicon Valley (2015), and awards such as the NSW Health Early-Mid Career Fellowship and 2016 Women in Research Citation Award (Health Informatics). She has contributed to over 100 research outputs, with recent work exploring telehealth adaptations, AI in health surveillance, and pandemic-related healthcare workarounds.
Her research spans digital health interventions, patient decision-making, and chronic disease management, often involving randomized controlled trials and mixed-methods approaches. Projects include the NSW Remote Patient Monitoring Program and VaxGuard to combat AI-generated vaccine misinformation.
