Annette Tietenberg is Professor of Art History at the Braunschweig University of Art since 2007, specializing in 19th and 20th century art. Her career includes research associate positions at the Berlin University of the Arts (1996-2001), teaching roles at Frankfurt, Marburg, Wuppertal, and Nuremberg institutions, and visiting professorships at Cologne (2005-2006) and Burg Giebichenstein (2006-2007).
Her educational background encompasses art history and modern German philology studies at Bonn and Berlin universities, culminating in a 2003 doctorate from Technical University of Berlin with the dissertation "Constructions of the Feminine. Eva Hesse: A 20th-Century Artist Myth."
Tietenberg's research explores transcultural curating, aesthetic orders of living, reception aesthetics, and art exhibition histories. She investigates intercultural pattern transfers, Space Age design, authentication strategies, and post-industrial knowledge cultures, bridging historical analysis with contemporary curatorial practice. Her work emphasizes visual culture's role in shaping societal structures and cross-cultural exchanges.
Recent publications (2023-2024) demonstrate deepening engagement with visual instruction systems, domestic spaces in feminist art, and transnational curatorial frameworks. Key trends include analyzing historical court ceremonies through snow drawings, examining Martha Rosler's photomontages on war domestication, and studying modernist plant symbolism, revealing interdisciplinary connections between art history, social studies, and cultural diplomacy.
Her scientific recognition includes:
- Senior Fellow at Alfried Krupp Wissenschaftskolleg Greifswald (2014)
- Curator in Residence at Belvedere Museum Vienna (2017)
Tietenberg has curated over 15 major exhibitions including "integral art project" (NGBK Berlin), "Frankfurter Kreuz" (Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt), and "ZERO G" (HBK Braunschweig), frequently collaborating with institutions like NGBK Berlin and Schirn Kunsthalle. These projects explore everyday life transformations, transnational artistic exchanges, and exhibition copy reconstructions, establishing her as a leading voice in contemporary curatorial discourse.
Her active collaborations with curators like Melitta Kliege and Ute Ziegler, plus ongoing research on transcultural patterns, position her at the forefront of redefining art historical methodologies for globalized contexts.
