Annette Joseph-Gabriel holds the John Spencer Bassett Associate Professorship in Romance Studies at Duke University, with affiliations in both the Romance Studies Department and the Gender, Sexuality & Feminist Studies Program within Trinity College of Arts & Sciences. Her research focuses on intersections of literature, gender, and cultural history, supported by grants from organizations including the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Folger Shakespeare Library.
Education: PhD in Romance Languages (2015), Vanderbilt University; MA in Romance Languages (2012), Vanderbilt University; AB in French and Francophone Studies (2009), Williams College.
Research interests emphasize 19th-century French literature, early American cultural studies, and feminist critical theory. Her work explores how literary texts negotiate gender norms and colonial narratives. Recent projects examine transatlantic intellectual exchanges and the role of women writers in shaping national identities.
Recognition includes the prestigious MLA Prize for a First Book (2020) recognizing scholarly contributions to literary studies. Professional service includes participation in Duke’s Faculty Success Program (2023) and membership with the National Center for Faculty Development & Diversity.
