Annette Idler is an Associate Professor in Global Security at the University of Oxford’s Blavatnik School of Government and Founding Director of the Global Security Programme at Pembroke College. She is a Senior Research Associate at the Department of Politics and International Relations and an affiliate at the Latin American Centre. Her research focuses on global security dynamics, armed conflict, borderlands, and the illicit economy. Idler holds a doctorate from Oxford’s Department of International Development and has advised governments and international organizations, including UNDP and the German development cooperation. She has authored award-winning books like Borderland Battles and co-edited Transforming the War on Drugs. Her work has received accolades such as the APSA International Security Best Article Award and the Premio Iberoamericano Book Award. Idler’s research emphasizes the interconnectedness of local conflicts and global power shifts, particularly in border regions. She leads projects like the Conflict Platform and CONPEACE, addressing security challenges in Colombia and beyond. Her recent studies explore hybrid sovereignties in border zones and the role of illicit authority in megaprojects.
