Annette Burgess is Professor of Medical Education at the University of Sydney's Sydney Medical School, where she co-leads the Clinical Teaching Fellowship program. As a Principal Fellow of Advance HE, she has made significant contributions to medical education through the development of innovative teaching programs including the Clinical Teacher Training (CTT) and Peer Teacher Training (PTT) initiatives. Her work spans across multiple international contexts including Burma, Mongolia, and Vietnam, where she has contributed to curriculum development and educational capacity building.
Professor Burgess's research program focuses on team-based learning, peer-assisted learning, and faculty development, with over 90 publications demonstrating her expertise in these areas. Her work consistently bridges theory and practice, using educational research to improve medical and health professional curricula. Key themes in her research include interprofessional education, assessment methodologies, educational technology integration, and the development of professional identity among healthcare learners. Her international collaborations have extended her impact across the Asia-Pacific region, particularly in veterinary education and specialized healthcare training.
Analysis of Professor Burgess's recent publications (2023-2025) reveals several emerging trends in her research. She has increasingly focused on interprofessional education, with particular attention to student-led clinics and community-based learning environments. Her work on team-based learning has evolved to incorporate critical theoretical perspectives, including Bourdieuan analysis of social capital in educational settings. Additionally, she has expanded her research into specialized populations, such as children with intellectual disabilities, and has begun exploring the application of artificial intelligence in surgical education. These developments demonstrate her ability to adapt educational research to address contemporary challenges in healthcare training.
