Annette Bayer is a Professor at the Department of Chemistry, UiT The Arctic University of Norway, specializing in chemical synthesis and analysis. Her research focuses on developing antimicrobial agents, overcoming antibiotic resistance, and utilizing carbon dioxide in synthetic chemistry.
Her work includes designing phenylboronic acid-based inhibitors to restore β-lactam antibiotic efficacy against KPC-2-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae, exploring fluorinated captopril analogues to inhibit metallo-β-lactamases, and investigating asymmetric boracarboxylation reactions using CO2 as a C1 source. She also develops amphipathic barbiturates and hydantoins as membranolytic antimicrobials, with applications in cancer therapy and biofilm disruption.
Recent publications highlight her team's progress in liposomal delivery of antimicrobial mimics, DNA micelle formulations for sustained antibacterial activity, and sustainable solvent systems like lipids for catalytic reactions. Her 2023 article in Frontiers in Pharmacology demonstrated cytolytic and immunogenic effects of marine-inspired barbiturates on head and neck cancer cells.
Teaching innovations include restructuring organic chemistry courses to improve learning outcomes and advocating for part-time oral exams as an efficient assessment method.
