Annemarie Mertens serves as a Teaching Fellow in the Department of Indian Studies at the Institute of Asian and Oriental Studies, University of Zurich, where she has been actively engaged in teaching, program development, coordination, and student advising since 2005. She currently holds leadership roles as Delegate of the Senior Researchers and Teaching Staff (FFL) in the Institute's Assembly (since 2021) and Teaching Staff Representative on the program committee (since 2019).
Her academic credentials include:
- PhD in Indology from Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster (1997)
- Studies in Indology, Ancient Near Eastern Archaeology, and Philosophy at Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster (1988-1997)
- Research Assistant position at Tell Beydar, Syria excavations (1993-1995)
Dr. Mertens' scholarly work centers on Classical Hinduism, the historical development of Indian religions and society, and Sanskrit literary traditions—with specialized expertise in epics, Purāṇas, and Dharmaśāstras. Her teaching portfolio encompasses comprehensive Sanskrit and Pali language instruction across all proficiency levels, as well as seminars covering Buddhist texts, Indian religious practices, foundational Indology, and specialized courses like "Hinduism and Hindu Nationalism" for the Master of Advanced Studies in Applied History.
She received significant research support through the University of Zurich's Research Fund and Grant for Junior Researchers (2002-2005) and previously served as Administrative Head of the Schweizerischen Asiengesellschaft SAG (2013-2016).
As a dedicated Student Advisor, she provides academic guidance to Indian Studies students while representing teaching staff interests through her committee roles. Her administrative contributions extend to coordinating continuing education programs in university teaching and learning methodologies.
