Annemarie Groot

Annemarie Groot serves as Group Leader in Climate Resilience at WIMEK, Wageningen University & Research, with active roles in PhD supervision and project leadership. Her work bridges climate science and agricultural practice across Eastern Africa and the Netherlands.

Her research centers on Climate Change Adaptation in food systems, specializing in Climate Risk Assessment for staple crops (potato, common bean, green gram) and Nature-based Solutions. She develops climate information services for SMEs and financial institutions to enable climate-smart investments, with regional expertise in Eastern Africa and Dutch water management.

Recent publications reveal a concentrated focus on crop-specific climate vulnerability in East Africa, using modeling to project yield impacts and identify adaptation pathways for smallholder farming systems.

Dr. Groot has supervised two PhD candidates: Kirina, T. (climate-smart agriculture in Eastern Africa) and Vij, S. (climate adaptation governance in South Asia). She leads projects including climate-water risk services for agrifood businesses and nature-based coastal protection in the Markermeer/Ijsselmeer region.

As WIMEK Group Leader, she directs interdisciplinary teams collaborating with Eastern African research institutions, Dutch NGOs, and governmental bodies to implement climate-resilient food system strategies.
