Dr Anneke Meyer is a Senior Lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University, specializing in media-driven discourses around paedophilia, child sexual abuse, gender, binge drinking, rape, and moral panics. She completed her PhD in Sociology at the University of Manchester in 2004, focusing on social reactions to paedophilia and media responses. Her research explores how media shapes cultural norms, laws, and public attitudes, with specific projects on Islamophobia and moral panics involving Abu Qatada in the British press.
She co-authored the book Gender and Popular Culture (Polity Press, 2010) with Katie Milestone and serves as a review editor for the British Sociological Association's Sociology journal. She has been involved in advisory roles, including the Joseph Rowntree Advisory Board for the project Transmission of Drinking Cultures (2008–2010), and participates in study groups like the BSA's media and childhood groups and the University of Kent's Parenting Cultures study group.
