Anne van Driessche is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the End-of-Life Care Research Group, affiliated with both Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and Ghent University. She is based at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences within the Department of Public Health and Primary Care. Her work focuses on critical aspects of pediatric palliative care and communication in oncology settings, particularly addressing the complex needs of adolescents with cancer and their families.
Dr. van Driessche's research interests center on pediatric palliative care, advance care planning, doctor-patient communication, and parent-adolescent communication in oncology contexts. She specializes in developing and evaluating complex interventions using mixed-methods research approaches to improve clinical practice and patient outcomes. Her work bridges the gap between theoretical frameworks and practical implementation in healthcare settings.
Her publication record demonstrates a strong focus on the BOOST intervention for pediatric advance care planning, with multiple high-impact publications in journals like BMC Palliative Care, European Journal of Pediatrics, and European Journal of Oncology Nursing. Her research trajectory shows progression from protocol development (2021) through feasibility studies (2022), to full randomized controlled trials (2023-2025), examining not only intervention effectiveness but also recruitment challenges, communication dynamics, and developmental considerations in serious illness.
Her work consistently addresses the intersection of pediatric oncology, palliative care, and communication, with particular attention to the psychological and developmental aspects of care for adolescents facing serious illness. She has developed expertise in both qualitative and quantitative methodologies, often combining them in mixed-methods approaches to capture the full complexity of care planning in pediatric oncology.
