Acclaimed poet Anne Waldman serves as Distinguished Professor of Poetics at Naropa University's Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics, which she co-founded with Allen Ginsberg in 1974. A central figure in the "Outrider" experimental poetry community for over four decades, she operates as writer, editor, performer, and cultural activist across New York City and Boulder, Colorado.
Her research pioneers radical linguistic and cognitive shifts within Beat, New York School, and Black Mountain poetic traditions, investigating consciousness through innovative modal structures. Waldman's feminist anti-war epics like The Iovis Trilogy and long-form cultural interventions including Manatee/Humanity exemplify her commitment to poetry as political action and consciousness exploration.
Her major recognitions include:
- Guggenheim Fellowship (2013)
- Poetry Society of America’s Shelley Memorial Award
- Chancellor of the Academy of American Poets
As foundational infrastructure curator, Waldman co-founded The Poetry Project at St. Mark's Church and directed Naropa's Buddhist-inspired academic programs while maintaining fellowships at Bellagio Center and Civitella Ranieri Foundation. Her activist practice extends to Occupy Art initiatives, demonstrating sustained integration of poetic innovation with social justice movements.
