Anne W. Beaven, MD is an Associate Professor of Medicine and serves as Vice Chief of Operations in the Division of Hematology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. She specializes in the treatment of patients with all types of Hodgkin and Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, with particular expertise in cutaneous (skin) lymphomas such as mycosis fungoides and Sezary syndrome. Dr. Beaven is the hematology lead/developer of the UNC Multidisciplinary Cutaneous Lymphoma Clinic and is extensively involved in the development of the UNC Lineberger CAR-T therapy program.
Her educational background includes an undergraduate degree from Wesleyan University, followed by her medical degree, residency, and fellowship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She also received a Howard Hughes Grant to fund summer research in Chemistry during her undergraduate studies at Wesleyan University in 1992.
Dr. Beaven's research focuses on advancing treatments for lymphoma, particularly through CAR-T cell therapy development for T-cell lymphomas. Her clinical expertise spans cutaneous lymphomas, mycosis fungoides, Sezary syndrome, T-cell lymphoma, Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and Hodgkin lymphoma. She is actively involved in developing clinical trials for patients with lymphoma, with a special emphasis on CAR-T approaches that harness patients' immune systems to fight their disease. Her work bridges translational research with direct patient care, focusing on difficult-to-treat lymphoma subtypes.
Analysis of her recent publications reveals a strong emphasis on CAR-T cell therapy applications for lymphoma treatment, clinical practice recommendations for stem cell transplants in cutaneous lymphomas, and therapeutic updates for refractory Hodgkin lymphoma. Her research demonstrates a progression from foundational work on supportive care in transplantation to cutting-edge immunotherapies, reflecting the evolution of lymphoma treatment over the past two decades.
Her scientific recognition includes:
- Alliance Lymphoma Leadership Committee member (2016-present)
- Lymphoma Research Foundation's Mantle Cell Consortium member (2014-present)
- ASH Advocacy Leadership Institute participant (2014)
- Department of Medicine Faculty Development Academy Fellow at Duke University (2011-2013)
- T Cell Lymphoma Consortium member (2010-present)
- NIH-funded research fellow in Clinical Research Curriculum (2005-2007)
Dr. Beaven leads numerous clinical trials for lymphoma patients and serves as a principal investigator for several CAR-T therapy studies. Her grant funding includes NIH-sponsored research through mechanisms such as the K30 and T32 awards. She works collaboratively with dermatologists, particularly Dr. Edith Bowers, to provide comprehensive care through the multidisciplinary cutaneous lymphoma clinic.
She co-leads the UNC Multidisciplinary Cutaneous Lymphoma Clinic with Dr. Edith Bowers from dermatology, creating a specialized team approach to diagnosing and treating skin lymphomas. Her involvement in the UNC Lineberger CAR-T therapy program represents a major institutional initiative to bring cutting-edge immunotherapies to patients with difficult-to-treat lymphomas, particularly focusing on applications for T-cell lymphoma where such approaches have been less developed.
