Halbertsma's research focuses on employee ownership structures and their long-term regional economic effects, drawing from both employee ownership literature and entrepreneurial ecosystems frameworks. Her work examines how corporate democracy initiatives influence regional development patterns, with particular attention to Dutch business contexts. She investigates the relationship between worker participation models and economic resilience in different geographical settings.
Her recent publications analyze employee participation mechanisms across Dutch SMEs and large corporations, comparing international models and examining policy implications. This research contributes to understanding how ownership structures affect business performance and regional economic outcomes.
As an educator, Halbertsma teaches courses including Qualitative Research Methods (ECB2QRM), Business Research Methods (ECB3BRM), and Strategy and Management (ECB3SM) at both bachelor's and master's levels. Her teaching integrates practical policy experience with academic theory.
Prior to her academic career, Halbertsma worked for the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy, focusing on startup and scaleup policy development. This government experience informs her research on entrepreneurial ecosystems and regional economic development.
