Anne Osborne is a Professor in the Communications department at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, Syracuse University. Her academic career spans institutions including Syracuse University and Louisiana State University where she spent 14 years prior to joining Newhouse.
Osborne's research focuses on gender dynamics in sports media and culture. Her work examines how gender identity shapes sports fandom experiences, particularly for women NFL fans, and explores the challenges faced by transgender and intersex athletes in binary sports systems. She approaches media and culture through the lens of gender studies, bringing critical perspective to sports communication.
Her publications consistently address gender representation in sports media, with particular attention to how traditional gender binaries are maintained or challenged in sports culture. Osborne's work bridges academic theory with practical applications in media studies and communication.
Osborne has served in significant administrative roles including acting communications department chair (2016) and director of program review and assessment (2017-18). Prior to Syracuse, she held leadership positions at Louisiana State University including advertising department head and associate dean.
