Anne Orford is the Melbourne Laureate Professor and Michael D Kirby Chair of International Law at Melbourne Law School (University of Melbourne). She specializes in international law, climate change, legal history, and the theory of international law. She holds visiting professorships at institutions including Université Paris 1, Lund University, and NYU School of Law, and has presented globally, including a Special Course at the Hague Academy of International Law (2021).
Her research focuses on historical and theoretical dimensions of international law, with notable works like International Law and the Politics of History (2021) and Reading Humanitarian Intervention (2003). She is a Member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration, a Fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia, and former President of the Australian and New Zealand Society of International Law.
Orford has received prestigious awards, including honorary doctorates from three European universities and the Woodward Medal. She has advised the Pacific Islands Forum on climate change and international law and contributed to over 50 keynote lectures and plenary addresses at major international conferences.
Her academic leadership includes roles as a Senior Emile Noël Research Fellow at NYU and Olof Palme Visiting Professor at Stockholm University. She currently teaches Climate Change and the Politics of International Law at Harvard Law School since 2019.
