Anne Murphy is an Associate Professor in the Department of History and Chair in Punjabi Language, Literature and Sikh Studies at the University of British Columbia. She holds a Ph.D. from Columbia University and specializes in cultural and intellectual history of the Punjab region, focusing on language, religious formations, oral history, and material culture. Her research explores modern Punjabi literature's political imaginaries, early modern Punjabi literary history, and transnational advocacy for Punjabi language.

Her research interests include: the history of Punjabi language, Sikh tradition, Partition memory, and public humanities. Current projects involve translating Waris Shah’s 18th-century text Hīr and documenting caste dynamics in Canada. She has held leadership roles including Director of the Centre for India and South Asia Research and Associate Dean in the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
Her work bridges academia and the arts, collaborating on projects like the Dūje Pāse toṅ exhibition and oral history initiatives such as the “Punjabi in BC” and “Caste in Canada” studies. Her publications include The Materiality of the Past (2012) and co-edited volumes on Bhai Vir Singh and Partition memory.
