Dr. Anne-Mette Hermans is an Assistant Professor at Tilburg University’s Tilburg School of Social and Behavioral Sciences (Tranzo department). Her research focuses on body ideals, the cosmetic procedures industry, and patient experiences. She chairs the Expertisegroep Cosmetische Ingrepen, an interdisciplinary group analyzing the Dutch cosmetic surgery industry through mixed-methods research. As academic lead of the Filtering Reality project, she develops media literacy programs addressing youth body image. Key research themes include adolescents’ attitudes toward cosmetic procedures, gendered perceptions of beauty, and the commercialization of aesthetic interventions.
Her work integrates sociological and cultural analysis, with recent projects exploring practitioner roles in medical aesthetics and the normalization of cosmetic procedures. She co-authored Discourses of Perfection (2021, Routledge), analyzing UK cosmetic industry marketing. Current projects investigate complications post-procedure and digital culture influences on body image.
