Professor Anne Mather is a geomorphologist at the University of Plymouth's School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences. Her research focuses on fluvial geomorphology, tectonic geomorphology, and arid environments, with a particular emphasis on Quaternary landscape evolution and climate-tectonic interactions. She has supervised numerous PhD students investigating topics such as river terrace formation, landslide hazards, and paleoenvironmental reconstruction.
Teaching interests include field-based geoscience education, innovative use of drone technology and Google Earth tools, and courses on cold environments, fluvial systems, and tectonic processes. She holds a Senior Fellowship from the Higher Education Academy and contributes to teaching accreditation at Plymouth University.
Her research spans global regions including Spain, Morocco, Chile, and the Atacama Desert, addressing questions about river incision rates, landslide dynamics, and the influence of climate and tectonics on landscape evolution. Recent work explores punctuated river incision models and lithological controls on erosion processes.
Fieldwork expertise includes high-altitude and arid environments, with methodologies combining field observations, cosmogenic dating, and numerical modeling. She has published extensively on topics such as strath terrace formation, alluvial fan dynamics, and paleoflood reconstructions.
