Dr. Anne-Marie Singh is a Professor in the Department of Criminology at Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), affiliated with the Yeates School of Graduate Studies and a Research Fellow at the Centre for Digital Humanities. She holds a DPhil in Sociology from the University of London, alongside MA and BA degrees in Criminology and Sociology from the University of Toronto. Her academic career includes teaching positions at the University of Guelph, University of Toronto Scarborough, and York University prior to joining TMU in 2005.
Her research focuses on critical and anti-racist criminology, contemporary social theory, policing, governance, and social control. Notable projects include the Criminal Justice Firsts Project (collaborating with librarian Mandissa Arlain) documenting contributions by racialized/Indigenous professionals, and SSHRC-funded work on policing reform in post-Soviet Ukraine/Estonia with Dr. Matthew Light. She also co-led the Crime Fact Infographics project with MA student Émilie Vanhauwaert, addressing crime myths using data-driven visuals.
Her publications span comparative criminology, private security dynamics, and post-apartheid South African policing. She has supervised graduate students across MA and PhD programs, and contributed to policy reports on crime prevention and justice reform in South Africa and Canada. Her work bridges theoretical criminology with practical governance challenges, emphasizing global and anti-racist perspectives.
