Dr. Brosnan's research examines underground schooling networks, colonial education frameworks, missionary teacher movements, and teacher training methodologies within contested racial landscapes. Her work integrates quantitative historical analysis with social justice perspectives, significantly contributing to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) scholarship and Freedmen's Bureau studies.
Her 2025 monograph A Contested Terrain: Freedpeople’s Education in North Carolina During the Civil War and Reconstruction establishes foundational insights into educational resistance and institution-building among freed communities. This Fordham University Press publication represents a critical intersection of American Civil War studies, African American educational resilience, and Southern historiography.
Academic service includes co-organizing the 2024 American Conference for Irish Studies, demonstrating cross-disciplinary engagement. She actively mentors emerging scholars and currently accepts PhD students specializing in historical educational equity and post-emancipation learning systems.
